Prepared for the trail, but not the journey…
The forthcoming memoir, One Mountain After Another, recounts the incredible true story of a post-retirement legacy hike on Vermont’s Long Trail, the oldest and most challenging trail in North America. Having walked 100 miles to reach Sherburne Pass, Tim Bennett stands mere steps from retracing the trail section his father hiked 85 years earlier, when his dreams are shattered by a speeding car.
Lying on the road, unable to move, he questions everything. Will he survive? Will he hike again? Or even walk again? After a year of hospitals, surgeries, physical therapy, and forest bathing, he returns with a new appreciation for the trail. Using his father’s trail journal as his guide, he confronts one mountain after another. Some of them are well-known peaks, while others don’t appear on any map or chart. He hikes through historic storms, catastrophic flooding, and trail closures to discover a connection with his family legacy.
